Mermaid Cabaret Act at the Willow Tree, Bourn

Mermaid Ondine reports:
On the 21st February, the Merlesque Mermaids were part of the fabulous Valentine's-themed Night Circus event at the Willow Tree restaurant in Bourn.  It's a great restaurant, and a beautiful setting for an evening of fab food and live entertainment. Myself and Mermaid Melusine started the evening greeting the guests as they arrived and handing out  cocktails (or mocktails for those who won't drink!) - pomegranate, prosecco and popping candy, they sounded delicious! We were joined by the musical stylings of Below the String, in the form of two very adorable cherubs with glowing costumes! Then we moved on to the cabaret show...
As you can see from the pictures, Mermaid Melusine was debuting a brand new green tail and matching green-and-gold shell top, meaning that our cabaret costumes are now more co-ordinated than ever! As the guests finished up their starters, we moved on to our Valentine's-themed musical comedy act, including some saucy details about romance under the sea, and a couple of our favourite mermaid cabaret songs. It went down a treat with the audience, and hopefully we have managed to capture the set on film as well, so keep an eye on our YouTube channel for further developments!

We had a wonderful time at the Willow Tree, and hopefully we will be returning there later on this year for more mermaid fun!

Mermaids at Cabaret Roulette - the inside story...

21/4/2014

Mermaid Ondine reports:

As we mentioned in a previous blog post, the Merlesque mermaids performed at Cabaret Roulette earlier in the month, and now we've got the photos back from the talented Katie of Rhinoa's Photography, it would appear that the time is ripe for a blog post!

Cabaret Roulette is a great event, held once a month at Madame Jojo's in London. It's cabaret with a twist - each show has a theme which is chosen in advance by the audience via Facebook and the previous month's live show. Eight different cabaret artists then have two months to create a new act based around that theme.

The Merlesque mermaids were very excited to be a part of April's show! Obviously we were secretly hoping that the chosen theme would be "Underwater", thus making our lives extremely simple, but it was not to be, and instead the theme selected was "Guilty Pleasures"...

We thought this topic was a fun chance not only to explore exactly what our mermaidenly guilty pleasures are, but also to find out a little bit more about what passes for a guilty pleasure in the human world!  So Mermaid Melusine and I put together a ten-minute musical comedy cabaret act with four songs on a variety of subjects including (but not limited to) human dating, capitalism, and that most mermaidy pastime: causing shipwrecks. Sadly, I can't go into further detail without revealing mermaid secrets...

So, on the 9th April we duly headed down to London (by train, incidentally... our tails got one or two strange looks on the Tube!) and Madame Jojos.

We had great fun meeting all the other performers for the evening, there was a really creative and diverse set of different acts - and an even more diverse range of guilty pleasures on show!

The set was great (I was particularly pleased that the gold sparkly curtain matched my tail so perfectly); the other acts were both lovely and talented; we were more than delighted to be carried on- and off-stage by the charming Mr Phil InGud; the only minor mishap was that our ukelele sustained a slight knock while being brought onstage and consequently one string was a little out-of-tune! Happily the audience didn't appear to mind, and indeed seemed to enjoy our performance just as much as we did. In fact, our Guilty Pleasures act went so well that we're bound to be performing it again sometime soon (watch this space for details).

Of course, thus far you only have my word that any of this is true, so I'll finish by quoting the review by London City Nights: "It's difficult to pin down exactly what's so erotically magnetic about a pair of murderous ukelele wielding half woman half fish girls - I began to suspect it was excavating some long-buried pre-adolescent yearnings for Ariel from The Little Mermaid.  These suspicions were confirmed when they launched into a twisted cover of Part of My World mixed up with references to cut-throat capitalism and Karl Marx.  Be still my beating heart!"
