Like all mermaids, the sirens at Merlesque absolutely love the water. But at the same time, we recognise that it can be a dangerous place - especially for you humans! At this time of year it's especially important to be aware of how to stay safe in the water - did you know that on average, one person dies every 17 hours in the UK from drowning? Drowning is also the third-highest cause of accidental death in children in the UK.
The Amateur Swimming Association is promoting it's Get Safe campaign this year to encourage everyone to learn more about water safety, and it's especially targeted at parents - don't forget that baths and paddling pools can be just as dangerous as swimming pools and oceans. The Merlesque mermaids would like to encourage all parents and carers of children to familiarise themselves with the ASA's key water safety tips, and also with the symptoms of drowning - they're not necessarily what you might expect, because a drowning person often will not splash, will not make a noise and seems to be upright in the water.
Having fun in the water is such a special thing for people of all ages. Please make sure you enjoy the water safely - there might not always be a friendly mermaid around to help :)
