We Merlesque mermaids don’t always like talking about ourselves (that would be shellfish .... too much like fishing for compliments). So today we’re featuring five of our favourite sea-lebrities on our blog...

Everyone loves the mer-princess who bargains her voice for human form to pursue the handsome Prince Eric. Disney’s animated musical The Little Mermaid was adapted from Hans Christian Anderson’s 1837 story, but while Disney’s Ariel gets her man, Anderson’s rejected and broken-hearted mermaid disintegrates into foam. We hope this does not happen to us...

Blackbeard plundered many a merchant ship during the 18th century, the ‘Golden Age’ of Piracy. A ferocious figure, he wove rope into his long beard and lit the ends on fire, giving him a demonic appearance.
Eventually he was shot, stabbed and decapitated by bounty hunters, after which his headless body swam a few laps around his ship. We wouldn’t want to make anemone of him...

Paul lived in the Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany. He rose to fame during the 2010 World Cup, but had been predicting match results since 2008 – by selecting mussels from one of two boxes, each marked with a national team’s flag. Paul was possibly the world's most divisive octopus; Argentinean fans threatened to cook him, while German supporters turned against him when he predicted Spain would beat Germany in the semi-finals.

Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick tells of a giant, almost legendary, white sperm whale. Captain Ahab – who lost his ship and leg to Moby Dick – dedicates his life to pursuing and wreaking vengeance on the White Whale, but is accidentally killed by his own harpoon. Few people know that Melville's creation was based on a real-life albino sperm whale known as Mocha Dick, who survived many encounters with 19th Century whalers.

Popeye was created by Elzie Crisler Segar in 1929 and has appeared in comic strips and animated cartoons ever since. With muscular forearms and anchor tattoos, Popeye derives his strength from eating inordinate quantities of spinach. He is in love with Olive Oyl, a coy and rather fickle flapper with enormous feet and hands. Together they look after the foundling child Swee’Pea.
